Komorebi—sunlight filtering through the leaves of trees—is, quite literally, a familiar scene created by trees and sunlight, yet we rarely notice it in our daily lives. Living surrounded by artificial light from television monitors and neon signs, however, we feel a sudden sense of peace when we look up at the sky glimpsed between the trees. A growing number of artists quietly cherish this feeling. Their forms of expression vary, from painters such as Rieko Hidaka, who depicts the very sensation of being enveloped by trees, to Takahito Kimura, who tries to create komorebi in various shapes using artificial light and umbrellas, but they clearly share an interest in plants and light. This may be seen as a movement to reconsider the images of life that light and plants carry.
This exhibition presents such works on the theme of “gentle light,” or “light and plants,” creating a quiet space filled with life and light amid the bustle of contemporary society.
