Japanese Bio

Based in Osaka and Kobe, Tomoko Inagaki graduated with a B.A. in Fine Art in London before returning to Japan to complete an M.A. in Art and Media Theory at Osaka University. She has developed her practice through artist-in-residence programs and exhibitions in Japan and internationally.

Recent solo exhibitions include OAG Art Center Kobe (2025), The Third Gallery Aya (2024), and CAS (2021). International presentations and residencies include MAWA, Winnipeg (2022) and FRISE, Hamburg (2016). Other exhibitions include Kawakyu Museum (2022), Casablanca Biennale (2017), WROUGHT (2016), and Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art (2013).

Alongside her artistic practice, she currently directs the art space AOTO Art and ARTCA, developing platforms for exhibitions and experimental artistic practice.

Artist Statement

My work explores unstable boundaries between self and other, life and death, nature and artificiality, and reality and fiction. These are also spaces where the distinction between documentation and staging begins to dissolve, and reality quietly slips into fiction.

Through video, performance, and mirror-based installations, I explore shifts in bodily perception, time, and the experience of reality. Repeated actions and fragmented reflections displace the contours of events, producing visual and perceptual transformations.

Artificial objects that mimic living forms, together with materials suggestive of decay, reveal processes of generation and collapse, quietly transforming the boundaries between living and non-living states.

Through these materials and structures, my work unsettles bodily perception and the experience of time, allowing the unstable sensation of being “here and now” to emerge.
