This Way and That

This work is a video installation featuring Noh masks, a traditional Japanese performing art. It highlights the masks’ ability to express emotions by changing angles, offering a fresh interpretation. The story begins with a conversation between an art teacher and a student, which initially seems as if the masks are talking. However, the dialogue reveals that the student asks to carve one mask to match another. The artist performs both roles by altering her voice. The masks are not actually carved, but lighting creates an illusion, making it unclear whether they are carved or not. Through minimal movement, this work questions the boundary between reality and illusion.

この作品は、日本の伝統芸能である能面を使用した映像インスタレーションです。能面が角度を変えることで多様な表情を生む特性に着目し、新たな解釈を提案します。物語はアートレッスンの先生と生徒の会話から始まり、一見するとお面同士が話しているように見えます。しかし、会話を進めるうちに、片方の能面を彫り、もう片方と同じにしたいという生徒の要望に沿ったやりとりの材料であることが明らかになります。会話はアーティストが声音を変えて一人で両役を演じています。能面は実際には彫られず、光の効果により彫られたかのような錯覚を生み出します。この作品は、最小限の動きと演者によって、観る者に現実と幻想の境界を問いかけます。
